Makerere University management is yet to recover more than Shs900m paid to staff in error in 2017.
A source at the university revealed that more than 1,000 non-teaching staff received a higher pay in 2017 contrary to their salary scales.
Documents that Daily Exclusives has seen, some staff on salary scale M11, who earn Shs3.01m were paid Shs3.18m at salary scale M10, according to the new salary structure of 2018/2019.
Some staff on salary scale M14, who earn Shs1.3m, were paid Shs1.9m on M12 scale.
Other staff on salary scale M15, who earn Shs1.1m were paid Shs1.9m at salary scale M12.
The former University bursar, Mr Augustine Tamale, confirmed the excess money that was paid to staff in error in a June 30, 2017 letter. He said the money paid in excess was Shs971m and recoverable from the staff.
“Recoveries are to be made from various staff amounting to Shs971, 566,043. This will be added to the amount retained on the salary account worth Shs63,527,015 to enable payment of staff on the M6 scale …. The remaining Shs59,950,474 will address all the other underpaid staff…” the bursar’s letter read in part.
However, the source said the university has not recovered the money to-date.
The source also said some staff who, were underpaid have petitioned court, which ordered the university to compensate them with at least Shs3 billion.
When contacted, Mt Tamale declined to comment on the issue, saying he had left the university. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, referred us to the University Secretary, Mr Charles Barugahare, who did not answer our calls.
University sued. The differences in the salary payments prompted the affected staff who were underpaid to sue the university in the Kampala Capital City Authority labour court for allegedly creating a wrong salary scale M6.1 and M6.2 from the original M6.
