Police in Mbale City have arrested a suspected witch doctor, Kharim Mwima, following the death of a woman named Jennifer Khainza in his shrine located in Kasanja village, Northern Division.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police spokesperson, confirmed Mwima’s arrest, stating that the suspect is helping with the ongoing investigation. “The report that came in is for one Mwima Kharim because we got reports that the victim died in his shrine. We are investigating to find out the exact cause of death, and we have already forwarded the body for postmortem,” he said.
The arrest was made possible through a joint operation between the police and Project Rescue Children Foundation and Cherished Children Foundation, organizations working to end human sacrifice and ritual murders. During the operation, an eight-year-old juvenile was rescued from the shrine.
Taitika urged the public to be vigilant and seek medical help from authorized places. “We call upon opinion leaders, religious leaders, and clan heads to sensitize the masses on the right places they can get services,” he added.
Adam Whittington, CEO of Project Rescue Children, condemned the heinous act, saying, “Human sacrifice is a dark and horrific reality, often ignored by Western society. It must be brought to light if we are to stop it.” He applauded the Ugandan Police Force for their swift action and determination in rescuing the child and arresting the suspect ¹.
